Awake Illinois Fellow of Law Enforcement 37-year Police Veteran Retired Riverside Chief of Police Father of Three IL Police Officers EMAIL: tqweitzel@outlook.com Background WATCH HIS INAUGURAL PODCAST EPISODE Chief Thomas Weitzel (Ret.) is a 37-year veteran of law enforcement, having served the Riverside, Illinois Police Department from 1984 until his retirement in 2021, including 13 years as Chief of Police. Rising through every rank in the department—from patrol officer to detective, sergeant, lieutenant, deputy chief, and chief—he held key roles such as Field Training Officer, Crime Prevention Coordinator, Public Information Officer, and Internal Affairs Supervisor. A graduate of the FBI National Academy (Session 218), Chief Weitzel also earned a Master’s Degree in Criminal Social Justice from Lewis University and completed advanced programs including the Illinois Law Enforcement Executive Institute and certifications as a Certified Police Chief for the State of Illinois. In 1987, early in his career, Chief Weitzel survived a point-blank shotgun ambush while on patrol, saved by his bulletproof vest—an experience that fueled his lifelong advocacy for officer safety, including legislative changes to eliminate statutes of limitations for shootings of officers and department-wide vest replacement policies. He received the Kevlar/DuPont Survivor’s Club Award for his survival.A respected leader and voice for the profession, Chief Weitzel has served on the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police Legislative Committee, lobbied for law enforcement funding and reforms, and currently serves as an Ambassador for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, supporting agencies, officers, and families affected by line-of-duty deaths. Known for his principled, constitutional approach to policing, evidence-based reforms, and commitment to community safety, Chief Weitzel is a national commentator on public safety issues. As Fellow of Law Enforcement at Awake Illinois, he contributes expert analysis to the Awake and Armed video podcasts and exclusive op-eds on the Awake Illinois blog , grounding discussions in real-world experience to promote safer communities and better-supported officers. Born to a family of Christian Arab immigrants from Jordan, and raised in Chicago, Helen has always embraced her rich heritage, with Arabic preceding English as her first language. An accomplished individual, she holds a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and works as an enterprise sales executive within the tech industry. A true community leader, Helen never hesitates to lend a hand. From her time as a dedicated Girl Scouts Troop Leader and involvement in fundraisers to assisting law enforcement with gratitude events, she's an enthusiastic advocate for parental rights and civic and economic development initiatives. Motivated by challenges in 2020, Helen co-founded a Niles Township coalition to empower parents, giving them a voice in their school board decisions. As Chapter Chair of Awake IL Niles Township and founder of Moms For Liberty's Cook County chapter, Helen tirelessly fights against harmful political ideologies and is committed to preserving childhood innocence. BACK TO ABOUT Shannon Adcock Mother of 3 Founder and President, Awake IL and Awake Americans EMAIL: shannon@awakeIL.com Background Shannon is the Founder and President of Awake Illinois. Born and raised in IL, she is the first woman in her family to receive a college degree after attending University of Illinois (2002). She and her husband of 20 years have three children and two scraggly old English sheepdogs. Shannon is a Naperville resident who has been actively involved in: Serving on the PTA Leading C ommunity Fundraisers and Philanthropy Activism for Parental Rights, Equality in Education, and Civic Empowerment She became an "accidental activist" during the reopening public schools effort and decided to run for the local board of education in Fall 2020. During the school board campaign, she was called a "White Supremacist" and a "racist" by local extremists for her pro-constitutional platform . However, she can take the punches and her determination was only further reinforced and fueled . Her advocacy is firmly rooted in her Christian Faith and she felt called to start this nonprofit organization. In May 2021 she launched Awake IL as a registered 501(c) to build a grassroots movement of fellow parents and citizens who are committed to protecting ALL children, our liberties, and our American way of life. She most recently founded affiliate organization Awake Americans , a 501c3 nonprofit that aims to awaken everyday citizens into advocacy and empower them to have courageous conversations.
